In this bulletin, there are several examples of adult learning and education (ALE) interventions in war situations, from Uzbekistan, to Mali, Ukraine, and Afghanistan. Daniel Bladh et al provide a rich example of growing authoritarianism, democratic regression, and contexts of war in their article. They question roles for popular education within highly charged conflict zones.

This special issue is oriented towards the future of adult education, within the wider landscape of lifelong learning. In looking ahead, we believe it is important to appreciate, and build upon, past developments as part of what might be called a “collective history”, or what anthropologists term our “collective memory” – giving due recognition to the importance of knowledge gained and passed on through oral and Indigenous traditions.

Critical research on colonial education should not only include the intentions of colonial actors, but also an awareness of possible learning outcomes that were intended or not intended by “the colonial masters”.
