My experience in adult learning and education
Prof. George Ladaah Openjuru, Vice Chancellor of Gulu University, is a transformative leader in Uganda’s Adult Learning and Education (ALE). By professionalising the field at Makerere University and advocating for "non-traditional students," he helped transition ALE from an informal practice to an academic discipline. Renowned for his "Community-University Engagement" model, he treats literacy as a "placed resource" tailored to socio-economic contexts. His leadership in post-conflict Northern Uganda and roles with the UNESCO Chair earned him the 2023 African Educationist of the Year award. Openjuru remains a vital bridge between local community needs and global lifelong learning standards.
