Jacinta Nayiga aged 39 years is a female and one of the adult learners participating in the Unbound Kampala sponsorship program. Jacinta was born in Tanzania but settled for marriage in Uganda. She celebrates her achievement of graduating with the ability to read and write with comprehension and is fluent in both Kiswahili and Luganda languages. In December 2020 unbound Kampala introduced Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) Program in Kyebe Sub County, Kyotera District. Unbound Kampala enrols illiterate and semi-illiterate sponsored parents to ICOLEW classes in the community. The focus is to reduce illiteracy levels among the communities enable them to participate better in matters that affect their wellbeing in society. Jacinta is a sponsored parent of Unbound Kampala from Kigazi Village, Minziiro Parish, Kyebe Subcounty, Kyotera district in Uganda. She was a learner in Tuliwangula Community Empowerment Group. In January 2021 Literacy sessions began and Jacinta joined the program. In 2022, the program was replaced by Integrated Community Learning for Wealth Creation (ICOLEW). Jacinta continued with her studies and on 14th December 2022 she graduated with a certificate having completed her Level Two. Jacinta is a Level Two graduate of Integrated Community Learning for Wealth Creation (ICOLEW). Jacinta is one of those that joined the ICOLEW program at “Level 0”. She was not able to read, write or count. She attended ICOLEW classes for 2 years (2021/2022) and was able to attain the necessary reading, writing and numerous skills, graduating as a Level Two learner. Jacinta faced a few challenges during her course of study; she was a victim of Gender based violence (GBV) that caused separation from her husband. She had to break her learning sessions due maternity leave. These affected her study progress, but she persevered. With the acquired skills, she can help her children with homework especially in numeracy. Jacinta is so appreciative to Unbound for granting her an opportunity to access education. “I couldn’t understand how useful education was until when I attended a Parents - Teachers Meeting at the school of my children where all parents were required to register in the attendance book. I requested a friend to assist me and write on my behalf, because I felt ashamed about not being able to write. I felt useless at that time”, said Jacinta. She further expressed how much she regretted not having had a chance to attend school. When Unbound Kampala enrolled Functional Adult Literacy (now ICOLEW) program in Siyooni Sub project, Kyebe, one of its operational areas, Jacinta had the opportunity to change her past. Unbound Kampala rolled out ICOLEW with an objective to reduce illiteracy levels in community and scale up sponsored parents’ ability to participate in Unbound activities and community at large. Jacinta focused on studying to be able to read and write so as boost her confidence and self-esteem as well as be able to help her children with reading, writing and numeracy homework. “Now I feel good that I can write my name by myself and can read and even guide my children in some homework”.
