DVV International raises honoraria for IAE facilitators in Malawi By Dyson Mthawanji In a move set to revolutionize adult education in Malawi, DVV International has increased in the monthly honoraria for Integrated Adult Education (IAE) facilitators. Effective June 2024, facilitators will now receive MK50,000 (about USD28) a whopping 233% rise from the previous MK15,000 (about USD9),. IAE Facilitators in the districts of Ntcheu and Mchinji in Malawi have welcomed the news with excitement, hailing the decision as a timely motivation booster. An IAE facilitator in Ntcheu district, Annie Njikho said: "The increased honoraria will not only improve our livelihoods but also energise us to work extra hard in empowering our communities through Adult Learning and Education. We'll be able to reach more learners and make a meaningful impact.” In Mchinji district, facilitator Drackson Kennedy shared similar sentiments. "We're thrilled and grateful for this recognition. The new honoraria will enable us to dedicate more time and resources to our work, ultimately leading to improved literacy rates and socio-economic development in our communities." He added that following the local currency devaluation in recently months, the currency lost value hence the MK15,000 was not enough to meet there needs. “Although MK50,000 is still on lower side considering the skyrocketing of the basic needs’ prices, we still appreciate as this is a great step considering where we are coming from,” added Kennedy. As DVV International continues to support ALE in Malawi, this development marks a significant milestone in the organization's efforts to promote lifelong learning and community empowerment. The facilitators under government literacy classes are still receiving MK15,000. As a close partner of the Malawi Government, it is DVV International’s hope that Malawi Government through the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare will increase the honoraria for the government sponsored literacy instructors.
