Global Campaign for Education 7th World Assembly
| Global Conference
The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) is a member-driven Movement, uniquely comprised of national civil society coalitions and regional and international networks and organisations committed to realising the right to education. With members in more than 90 countries, the network brings together grassroots organisations, teachers’ unions, children’s and youth rights organisations, NGOs, parents’ associations and community groups. GCE’s collective work as a network encompasses collaboration at global level to influence international frameworks and policy debates.
GCE relies on the participation of its members to drive its work and achieve its goals, and the World Assembly is the movement governing body. All members of GCE meet every 4 years to vote and decide the future of the movement. The 7th World Assembly, which takes place from 22nd to 24th November in Johannesburg, South Africa plays a major part in ensuring that members truly own and lead the movement. The Assembly offers our education civil society organisations around the world an opportunity to come together as a global movement to debate emerging issues, to agree and clarify collective positions, to learn from and exchange with each other, and to set priorities and direction for the coming period.Read more

COP27 side event (hybrid): Greening TVET, Adult Learning and Education
| Global Other
The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, the UNESCO Cairo Office and UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) warmly invite you to the hybrid side event, ‘Greening TVET, Adult Learning and Education’, at the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) on 9 November 2022. The event will shed the light on the importance of TVET and adult learning and education (ALE) for climate action.
Citizens worldwide – no matter their age – must be empowered with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to demand and support the green transition of our societies. Climate change mitigation requires a dedicated and comprehensive lifelong learning system, strategies and concrete action plans, at local, national and regional level, that place adult learning and education at the core. It also demands strong cross-sectoral and inter-ministerial partnerships to deliver ALE programmes aimed at raising awareness and equipping all individuals with the skills and knowledge to lead the transformation to a sustainable future.
The side event will highlight the role of adult learning and education and TVET and the importance of a targeted strategy and partnership in ALE and TVET provision for a sustainable and green future. It will also showcase good strategic practices at national/local, institutional and individual level (from the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, the UNEVOC Network and the UNESCO ESD Network).

International Literacy Day
| Africa Meeting
International Literacy Day
8 September
Since 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.
Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist with at least 771 million young people and adults lacking basic literacy skills today.
Rapidly changing global context took a new meaning over the past years, hampering the progress of global literary efforts. In the aftermath of the pandemic, nearly 24 million learners might never return to formal education, out of which, 11 million are projected to be girls and young women. To ensure no one is left behind, we need to enrich and transform the existing learning spaces through an integrated approach and enable literacy learning in the perspective of lifelong learning.
This year's International Literacy Day will be celebrated worldwide under the theme, Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces and will be an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all.
At the global level, a two-day hybrid international event will be organized on 8 and 9 September 2022, in Côte d'Ivoire. The International Literacy Day global celebration lies at the heart of regional, country and local levels. As such, this year's outstanding programmes and literacy practices will be announced through the 2022 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes award ceremony.

TVET Teachers and Lifelong Learning
Teachers are at the heart of lifelong learning systems. They not only enable individuals to reach their full potential, but also adapt to the rapid transformations of society, economies and labour markets. For Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teachers, this role is especially critical: by becoming lifelong learners and fostering lifelong learning capabilities, they prepare young people and adults alike to thrive in dynamic workplaces and to contribute to inclusive and sustainable societies.
To explore how policies and practices can support TVET teachers as both learners and facilitators of lifelong learning, join UIL and Shanghai Normal University for a webinar under the joint research project 'Teachers as Lifelong Learners'.
