What is Curriculum managerALE?

Curriculum managerALE is one of several curricula in DVV International’s ALE Toolbox. As part of its ongoing webinar series to share different approaches to adult learning and education (ALE), ACP-MOJA presented this curriculum on April 16th in a webinar with stakeholders from around Africa. Curriculum managerALE was created and presented by Dr. Johann Heilmannn (DVV International Regional Director for Southern Africa). It is a curriculum that was developed for managers of institutions of ALE. While such institutions go by different names (e.g. community learning centres, adult education centres, etc.) in different contexts, they are all local centres where adults can come to satisfy their learning needs and wants. The approach can also be adapted for ministry-level leaders and education administrators.

It was developed specifically for managers of adult education institutions, many of whom operate in communities providing skills such as literacy, academic knowledge and job-related skills, etc., meeting constantly-changing local and national needs. It is currently available in English, Arabic and Spanish, with French pending.

Stakeholders showed great enthusiasm for the approach, with Kenya enquiring if the curriculum could be adapted for their use. Dr. Heilmann replied that he would be happy to provide needed guidance and support for its implementation. Mali commented that the curriculum should be integrated into university programmes. Dr. Heilmann replied that academic partners are important to the curriculum’s adoption and integration in existing courses.

In answer to further questions, Dr. Heilmann responded that the Curriculum and its modules are adaptable to various contexts. Therefore, users should study its applicability in their own context and adapt it as needed. It can also be adapted for use in rural contexts, where managers may be facing various challenges with their adult education courses.
