Education as a Tool for Resilience

In today's world, adult education involves more than just literacy; it is a crucial tool for building community capacity to face environmental challenges. This was demonstrated on January 27, 2026, when the Community Learning Center (CLC) located at Ruvu JKT, Kibaha District Council, which is approximately 30km south from Dar es Salaam, conducted a historic tree-planting exercise.

The exercise involved planting 100 trees at the Ruvu JKT Primary School area. The event was held in commemoration of the birthday of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.Beyond the celebration, the event served as a practical class on environmental conservation and building community resilience. The Coast Region (Pwani), like many other areas in the country, faces the impacts of climate change, which manifest through rising temperatures and the destruction of natural vegetation.

Speaking during the exercise, the Adult Education Officer, Ms. Metrida Kahindi, emphasized on the adult education services delivered at the center aims to prepare a community capable of protecting itself against disasters .

Our goal is to teach adult learners environmental conservation through practice.

The initiative builds the learners' capacity to protect trees to make Tanzania green, a vital step in combating climate change that affects citizens' daily lives. This exercise integrates the concept of "education without limits". As learners understand the importance of planting trees, they learn how to restore natural vegetation, conserve soil moisture, reduce carbon emissions, and provide shade.

The trees planted included fruit and shade trees such as Java plum (mizambarau), African Teak (mivule), misaplus, and Jackfruit (mifenesi). This initiative builds a resilient community capable of self-reliance and productive output, even during times of rain deficiency.

The event received full support from various development stakeholders, including the National Service Military (JKT Ruvu), the District Executive Director and Tanzania Forest Services (TFS).

This collaboration demonstrates that environmental conservation is a collective responsibility. Through the Ruvu JKT Center, the Kibaha District Council is leading the way, showing that adult education is a strong pillar in protecting the environment for the welfare of current and future generations
