Justine’s Journey Through Integrated Community Learning for Wealth Creation (ICOLEW)
Uganda
Justine's story is a testament to the power of education and mindset shifts. By empowering individuals with knowledge and skills, adult education programs can boost agricultural productivity, resource management, and informed decision-making.
Ms. Nalubega Justine is a 41-year-old woman, a native of Muteegomba village in Kyotera District, and an active member of Tulyesiima Community Empowerment Group in Katula. Justine is a peasant farmer and a proud Level Five graduate of the Integrated Community Learning for Wealth Creation (ICOLEW) program, empowering her to make a positive impact in her quiet community. Her life has changed as a result of adult education and hands-on training in sustainable agriculture.
Before joining ICOLEW in 2023, her household struggled with food insecurity as they relied on meager yields from their crops for sustenance, and a significant part of her land was left uncultivated. She had limited knowledge about the potential of her soil, believing it could only support cassava and sweet potatoes. Attending ICOLEW sessions really altered this perspective.
Through the program, she acquired knowledge regarding modern agricultural methods, including the digging of terraces, the addition of organic manure, planting of shade trees with the aim of revitalizing the soil. Inspired by the group action plan that encouraged every member to plant at least 30 banana plants, Justine went above and beyond and planted 195 banana suckers. The results were nothing short of remarkable.
I decided to drop the old methods and apply what I learned. Many people mocked me for attending adult classes, but I stayed focused and now they come to me for advice.
Today, Justine’s family eats three nutritious meals a day, and her banana plantation not only feeds her household but also generates income. She sells banana suckers for UGX 1,500 each, and she plans to introduce consultation fees to further boost her income.
Justine completed the ICOLEW program in December 2024 with a Level 5 certificate. Her success embodies Unbound Kampala’s vision of creating “Stable and Happy Families.”
I’m grateful to Unbound for bringing ICOLEW to our community. The skills I gained have changed our lives.
Adult learning is a powerful tool for addressing food insecurity. By providing individuals with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need, adult education can empower communities to improve their food security, nutrition, and overall well-being.
Justine is proof that adult learning, when supported and applied, can shift mindsets, rebuild livelihoods, and secure a brighter future for entire families.
