International Literacy Day2024 small

As international Literacy Day approaches, we reflect on the transformative power of literacy in adult education and lifelong learning. UNESCO's 2024 theme, "Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace," resonates deeply with our work to advance Afro-centric adult education across the continent. Literacy is not just a skill—it is the foundation of empowered, resilient communities that can thrive in a changing world.

Across the rich mosaic of African diversity, literacy acts as a unifying force, binding communities together and nurturing mutual understanding. As we celebrate International Literacy Day 2024, we recognize that Africa's linguistic diversity is both a treasure and a challenge. With over 2,000 languages spoken across the continent, the promotion of multilingual education is not just a goal—it's a necessity. By championing literacy in multiple languages, we unlock doors to knowledge, preserve cultural heritage, and build bridges between communities.

Multilingual literacy empowers adult learners to navigate an increasingly interconnected world while maintaining strong ties to their roots. It allows individuals to access information in their mother tongue, enhancing comprehension and retention. Simultaneously, it opens avenues to learn additional languages, broadening horizons and fostering cross-cultural dialogue.

As adult educators, we embrace multilingual approaches that honour linguistic diversity. This involves creating inclusive learning environments where various languages are respected and utilized as assets rather than barriers. This approach not only enhances learning outcomes but also promotes social cohesion and peace by validating diverse identities and experiences.

As members of the MOJA community, we have a unique opportunity to champion multilingual literacy across Africa. By sharing resources, experiences, and best practices, we can develop innovative strategies to implement multilingual education in adult learning settings.

Let's use this International Literacy Day as a catalyst for action. Share your celebrations, learnings, and experiences; collaborate on developing resources; and advocate for policies that support linguistic diversity in education!
