DVV International raises IAE facilitators monthly honoraria
Malawi
In response to cost of living increases in Malawi, DVV International has increased the monthly honoraria for Integrated Adult Education (IAE) facilitators. Since June 2024, facilitators will now receive MK50,000 (about USD28) an increase of 233% from the previous MK15,000 (about USD9).
Integrated Adult Education (IAE) Facilitators in the districts of Ntcheu and Mchinji in Malawi have welcomed the news with excitement, hailing the decision as a timely motivation booster.
An IAE facilitator in Ntcheu district, Annie Njikho said:
The increased honoraria will not only improve our livelihoods but also energise us to work extra hard in empowering our communities through Adult Learning and Education. We'll be able to reach more learners and make a meaningful impact.
In Mchinji district, facilitator Drackson Kennedy shared similar sentiments:
We're thrilled and grateful for this recognition. The new honoraria will enable us to dedicate more time and resources to our work, ultimately leading to improved literacy rates and socio-economic development in our communities.
He added that following the recent currency devaluation, MK15,000 was simply not enough to meet their needs.
Although MK50,000 is still on [the] lower side considering the skyrocketing [cost] of the basic needs’ prices, we still appreciate [it] as this is a great step considering where we are coming from.
As DVV International continues to support ALE in Malawi, this development marks a significant milestone in the organization's efforts to promote lifelong learning and community empowerment.
The facilitators under other programmes are still receiving MK15,000. As a close partner of the Malawi Government, it is DVV International’s hope that Malawi Government through the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare will also increase the honoraria for the government sponsored literacy instructors.
