National Conference on Adult Learning and Education: A Successful Event in Tunis
Tunisia
The National Conference on Adult Learning and Education (ALE) was held on September 9, 2025, at the Arab Institute of Business Leaders (IACE) in Tunis. Organized by DVV International Tunisia and MOJA, the event brought together adult education practitioners, researchers, government representatives, as well as actors from civil society and the academic world.
Designed as a space for dialogue and strategic reflection, the event highlighted the progress, challenges, and future prospects of ALE in Tunisia and the region. It aimed to strengthen the recognition of ALE as a key lever to address contemporary challenges and to build an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable society.
The conference program focused on three main areas:
-
Policy and legislative frameworks governing ALE, with a comparative presentation of national contexts;
-
Innovative pedagogical approaches, such as REFLECT, semiotic-didactics, and the DUNE approach, explored through participatory workshops;
-
The strategic role of ALE in addressing global challenges, including climate change, digital transition, social inclusion, and employability.
The opening ceremony featured speeches by Nazaret Nazaretyan, Regional Director of DVV International – North Africa, and Jacqueline Groth, Head of German Cooperation at the German Embassy. Their remarks emphasized the importance of ALE as a driver of empowerment, inclusion, and sustainable development.
Throughout the day, participants shared and discussed various national and regional experiences. Adult education practitioners from Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, and Palestine presented their practices and initiatives, highlighting best practices and lessons learned in different contexts.
Another key moment was dedicated to innovative pedagogical approaches. Interactive workshops provided opportunities to explore participatory methods and consider ways to strengthen institutional capacities in the field of ALE.
MOJA Adult Education Africa, an online platform for professionals and practitioners of adult learning and education from the public sector, private sector, civil society, and academia, presented their work. The MOJA collaborative space aims to facilitate the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and good practices, thus contributing to the establishment of a strong network of ALE professionals in Africa.
The conference concluded with a discussion café on key topics in adult education, such as: digitalization and the current state of ALE; the contribution of ALE to economic transformation and green transition; the role of ALE in combating climate change; promoting coexistence in contexts of conflict and reconstruction; and multi-stakeholder collaboration in ALE. These discussions generated new ideas and recommendations to enhance the impact of ALE at both national and regional levels.
Beyond the speeches and workshops, the conference provided a valuable platform for dialogue, networking, and showcasing inspiring initiatives. By bringing together diverse and complementary voices, it helped to strengthen the national and regional momentum in favor of adult education, while opening new avenues for cooperation and development.
