WEBINAR: Building Employability Skills through Adult and Non-Formal Education for Employment and Job Creation
| East Africa Webinar
Date: 6 August 2024
Time: 11:30 - 12:30 (EAT)
Formal education provides skills that are relevant to the labour market. However, many individuals, including school dropouts and adults who never had the opportunity to complete their formal education, miss this chance. Adult and Non-Formal Education (ANFE) offers a vital second chance for these individuals. By equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge, ANFE has the potential to significantly improve their employability and capacity for job creation.
Unemployment and underemployment significantly contribute to poverty and socio-economic instability in East Africa. These challenges are often worsened by the fact that many people do not benefit from formal systems due to various reasons, such as economic barriers, dropping out of school early, cultural norms and being isolated geographically.
ANFE provides a pathway for these individuals to gain relevant skills and re-enter the job market, thereby promoting economic resilience and social inclusion. This webinar seeks to explore the role of ANFE in fostering job creation and enhancing employability, and to critique the notion that the crisis is more about a lack of jobs than a lack of skills.
Objectives of the Webinar
- To Explore the Role of ANFE in Employment and Entrepreneurship
- To Share Best Practices and Success Stories
- Critique Current Approaches
- To Foster Collaboration and Networking
Speakers
- Geoffrey Nchimbi – Tanzania – Folk Development Colleges
- Mwajuma Mohamed – Tanzania – Institute of Adult Education

TVET Teachers and Lifelong Learning
Teachers are at the heart of lifelong learning systems. They not only enable individuals to reach their full potential, but also adapt to the rapid transformations of society, economies and labour markets. For Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teachers, this role is especially critical: by becoming lifelong learners and fostering lifelong learning capabilities, they prepare young people and adults alike to thrive in dynamic workplaces and to contribute to inclusive and sustainable societies.
To explore how policies and practices can support TVET teachers as both learners and facilitators of lifelong learning, join UIL and Shanghai Normal University for a webinar under the joint research project 'Teachers as Lifelong Learners'.
